Self-portraits can be intimidating and for some of us it can be downright frightening. But they are so important! Self portraits are an amazing way for us to show our true selves in a creative and beautiful manner. Even the mundane, everyday moments take on new life when we put ourselves on the other side of the lens. Let's be honest, it's so easy to hide behind cute kids, amazing locations and gorgeous light. But putting ourselves in front of the camera?!? So daunting, and so rewarding! It's so important for us to find a way to show that we are here too.
Thank you to everyone for sharing this month. It's been so nice seeing you all in the frame! Congratulations to all of our featured artists. You are all such in inspiration!
Gear: Nikon D90 with 50mm lens
Settings: ISO320, f1.7, 1/350
The Shot: Found a spot of light coming through the hall window. Set it up (with husband checking I was in the shot)
Post Processing: Little edit in Lightroom, highlights and shadows up and texture and clarity down.
Gear: Nikon d750, 85mm lens and flashpoint flash
Settings: 1/160, f4.5, ISO500
The Shot: Sat on a bench with camera straight ahead on tripod and flash in my bathroom doorway (to my left/direction in facing). I used auto focus face detection to grab focus and used my phone app with a 2 second timer so I could toss the phone after pressing the shutter. Tried to position my dog and I so we weren’t having any limb chops but couldn’t quite get him to cooperate fully
Post Processing: Edited in Lightroom mobile to adjust wb and exposure, added slight vignette and used radial filters to reduce texture on my face
Gear: Canon 6D Mark II with Canon 20mm f/2.8
Settings: ISO 20,000 1/400 f/3.5
The Shot: Shot in the evening after dark so had to crank that ISO way up which wasn't great for editing. I set the tripod and used my phone as the remote to take 10 photos at once. I asked the boys to act crazy (not hard for them) and I didn't clean the playroom at all. This is how I feel as a mother - the house is always a mess, the boys never stop moving and I just want to scream.
Post Processing: This was edited in Lightroom with base preset from Two Blooms called '2 cool 4 u' then I decreased highlights all the way, decreased blacks and shadows slightly, upped contrast and increased exposure.
Gear: Nikon D750, Tamron 35mm 1.4
Settings: ISO 500, f/3.5, SS 1.80
The Shot: I was inspired by Vivian Maier's self portraits so I went around the house, trying to find reflections wherever I could
Post Processing: Chose medium contrast on the tone curve, lifted highlights and exposure, used the transform tool to straighten edges, and lens correction, and that was it!
Gear: Nikon D3500 35mm
Settings: ISO 100 f1.8 1/320
The Shot: We had an extremely windy day and I wanted to use it to create a self-portrait with some creative movement. I thought with the low f- stop it would create a fun capture and I loved the results!
Post Processing: Edited in Lightroom with Unblemished. Brought up my exposure just a little and my highlights!
Gear: So I shot this on my canon 5D Mark III & a 35mm lens
Settings: f2, ISO 2000, & 1/500
The Shot: To get this shot, I put my camera on my tripod, set it to burst mode, focused, & had to have my husband push the shutter because my intravolumeter kicked it. My kiddo & I just jumped after the count of 3.
Post Processing: It’s super dark in my room, accompanied by the fact that the sun has not really been around much this week, if at all, so I had to really push my ISO. So the photo is super noisy, but I pushed my detail slider as much as I could without making it look too horrible. I used a Goodlight Preset, took my exposure slider to 1, increased the shadows by quite a bit, & increased my clarity to 10. Then I straightened it a tad too.
Gear: Nikon D750 with Tamron 24-70mm on 24mm.
Settings: f3.2, iso 1600, 1/400.
The Shot: I shot this with intervalometer on a tripod on the bridge above the creek. I pass this fallen tree often and got the idea to do some self portraits on it awhile back but had chickened out prior, out of fear I'd slip or someone would pass and think I was a crazy person. Last weekend, I got the motivation!
Post Processing: I used a Virginia Greuloch preset and then took into photoshop and added a texture that deepened it
Gear: Nikon D5200.Lensbaby sol45
Settings: ISO 200 1/25s
The Shot: I sat my camera on top of a cake plate on top of my dining room table bench. Prism in front of the lensbaby to the right side of the image and rapid fire shots as I was shaking my head back and forth for more blur.
Post Processing: LR edit. Increased clarity. Dehazed. Added warmth.
Gear: Nikon D810, Tamron 24-70mm
Settings: ISO 200, f 4.0, 1/6400, 50mm
The Shot: I shot this in the hallway in the late afternoon sun. I have been watching the light change around the house and finding all these pockets of light. I just set up camera on the tripod low to the ground, did the settings and went and sat down in that light pocket. I underexposed a bit so as not to blow out the highlights.
Post Processing: Edited in LRC, adjusted WB and highlights, bumped up shadows and adjusted contrast. I believe that’s all I did.
Gear: Olympus OMD E-M10 Mark II with 45 mm f1.8
Settings: 1/30s - f10 - ISO 400
The Shot: All the settings were meant for something different and while we were on a ferry to just hop over a little canal, I noticed in my LiveView that I had the perfect angle for a self portrait... not paying too much attention if the settings work! I could have increased the shutter speed and instead take the aperture down ... but it worked out okay.
Post Processing: Edited with a preset called vintage winter as I thought the colors actually help to tell the story of an early cold morning
Gear: Nikon 750/ 24 mm
Settings: F/8 0.8 sec ISO 64
The Shot: I shot this on a tripod. I jumped up on my dresser and used my Nikon app to find focus.
Post Processing: I edited this in Lightroom. Used the black and white-Light preset from the fire collection by Jyo Bhamidipati from the Elements Presets and then just made some adjustments to the highlights, blacks and exposure.
Gear: Fuji XT3 with 35mm
Settings: Iso 1250, f2, 1/125
The Shot: My eldest has been working from home as her school bubble was sent home for a deep clean. We did some baking out of a box and I took the opportunity to get in the frame with her.
Post Processing: Edited in Lightroom with Elena Blair indoor preset. Increased the white balance, and exposure slightly, used a circular filter over our faces to bring up the shadows and then increased the texture.
